Review of Unity May

Posted by ELTboy on November 16, 2009

I decided to do another figure photoshoot review after the lingering unsatisfaction of the previous shoot of Donne Anonime. I reverted back to my usual setup and am more at peace with most of the resulting photos this time round. Anyway, my subject for this photoshoot is the 1/8 scale figure of Unity May by Good Smile Company. The figure was released in April earlier this year.

I felt in love with the figure the moment I saw the unpainted prototype in one of Danny Choo’s post. I like her overall character design a lot, especially the outfit. Unity May hails from Unionshift’s eroge, Unity Marriage ~ Futari no Hanayome ~. Her real name is Kazami Mei. She transforms into the bishoujo hanayome senshi, Unity May, with the power of the marriage ring. ^^; The one thing about eroge is that they always create beautiful character designs and when a reputable figure maker like Good Smile Company figurized a character, you know that will always translate into a beautiful sculpture.

Overall, Unity May is certainly a very beautiful figure to gaze at with her extravagant costume and dynamic pose. The figure herself does not touch the base and is connected by a piece of metal rod that connects her left feet to the base. While one might be concerned about leaning problems in the future, she is pretty stable in my opinion.

Here are closer looks at Unity May.

I love her face which is really beautiful despite being expressionless. From what little information I know about Unity May, the expressionless face actually suits her quiet personality well. The best part about the face for me is her beautfiful eyes. I loved her hair and two plaits as well. :)

Unity May wears a nice and slightly oversized head dress on her head. It would have been great if the head dress was magnetized though. GSC did that for Pixy Hiyori, so I was a little disappointed it wasn’t the same for Unity May. But since the head dress fits smudgely onto her head, it’s not a big issue actually.

Here are closer looks at her long, flowing cape.

The cape is probably the highlight of the figure. It has a rather unique shape, spots floral prints all over it and has 6 pipe-looking ornaments. The cape is also made of more rigid but light weight plastic. I guess that’s a good choice of material for the cape as it won’t weigh down on the figure and cause leaning problem. The cape is also removeable along with her head dress.

Here’s how Unity May looks like without her cape and head dress.

Obviously, Unity May looks much less sophisticated in just her combat attire, so personally, I prefer to display her with her full costume. She comes with an additional ribbon which you can attach to her back after removing her cape. The cape itself already has a ribbon moulded to it.

And here are closer looks at her combat outfit with her cape out of the way.

Nice and simple ninja-like outfit in my opinion. Since she is from an eroge, I guess it is inevitable to find a sexy modification of her outfit with her bra hanging out. ^^”

The footwear is not as extravagant as the rest of the costume but they are finished in glossy paint though which is a nice touch in my opinion. For those that owns Unity Yuno, you will find that they both share the same design for the base, which is the normal practice for figure makers sculpting figures from the same series.

The lower piece of Unity May’s combat outfit is also removable which is strange for me since her outfit is a one-piece ninja-like suit. I guess it is more obligatory than anything else since she is an eroge character. Anyway, here are the pantsu shots.

That’s a nice low cut pantsu… ^^” But the wedge dividing the body is rather obvious and unsightly, so she is still best fully clothed and protecting her modesty.

Her full retail price is 8,200 yen but I see many stores listing her at much less than 40% of that now. I guess she is not very popular with collectors. But she is well worth the price for me. My only complaint would be that the painting on the figure could have more crisp (might be just my copy) but overall, Good Smile Company delivers a very satisfying sculpture.

For those that owned Unity Yuno, it’s probably a no brainer to get Unity May too. For me, it was the other way round as I knew I definitely wanted Unity May, so I bought Yuno to keep her company. Of course, it doesn’t help that I am a set completionist. ^^” And although it is unlikely now, I do hope that GSC also release figures of Shinzenin Marie and Yuuki Otome from the same series to complete the foursome …. *prays to kami-sama*… :)

Unity Mei is really cute, more than Unity Yuno (first, I preferred Yuno). I love her colors and her expression. Thank for this review :)

This is one of the first figures I’ve seen a lot of when I came into the figure scene. The huge hat and billowing cape always made her a favourite for me.

Yes, I think her face is lovely, and her pose is nice.

I guess beautiful figures like her will always draw one deeper into the realm of figures collection. ^^” For me, I always like my figures with unique and out of this world kind of costume.

  3. You make a wonderful review.
I’m not attracted to this figure. This is not my style. However, GSC did a good job.

I specially like the purple tones in the figure. Really awesome.
Yellow bra and pantsu, delicious. ^^

Agree, her colors are really nice, especially those that like purple. I actually think her bra can be taken off…but not going to try to pull it off though..hehe..

    Nice review!! ^^
I agree that May definitely looks better in her full attire. Taking the hat off makes her head a bit weird. :-p One thing sadden me though – maybe due to manufacturing defects, the right fingers of my Unity May were not painted. >_<

      Thanks!
I can feel your pain. I will always be very sad if my figures have defects on them. I’m sure the figure is sad too. If only the china workers had checked properly…^^”

    I actually wanted to order her in HLJs last Super Sale and accidently ordered Pixie Hiyori back then…^^;;
I fell in love with her cape and its floral pattern the minute I saw her.Shes now once again on sale but now I dont have any money to spend on her :(

She’s on sale again?! When I get home from school I’ll have to see how much it’d cost me, and just how bad my financial situation is! Heh.

      • ELTboy said

@Blowfish: Me too, me too…I felt in love with her awesome outfit.

@Guy: Unity May’s on sale everywhere and there are a few with even lower price than HLJ, no love for her from others I guess. But she’s worth it, so grab her when you can.
